Overheating?

I have a 1994 dodge shadow with 138000 kms. The temp. Gauge went to very high, but the car doesn't appear to be overheating. The gauge went back to normal later, but seems to go up and down. I could hear a water sound, and there was wetness down the side of the rad near the belt area. Is my thermostat defective?

What size of motor do u have? 4cyl or V6. Could have a leaky water pump, Just top up the coolant, And allow it to idle for a 5 to 10 mins, then inspect if u can see an coolant leak, Could also have a bad coolant temp switch, Could give u a faulty reading temp gauge, Also could have HD gasket leak ocuring.
