2006 Dodge Ram Won't start

2006 Dodge Ram Four Wheel Drive Automatic 42000 miles

I just bought a Ram 1500 with 42k miles. On the way home the check engine light came on. I stopped at a friends shop and he read the code - something about mfr determined emmissions something or other. I started the truck later to go out and it started, but only ran for a second. It cranked for a while without starting, after waiting it started, but again died. Then it wouldn't even crank. Lot's of power to lights et cetera, but the starter doesn't even click. All fuses seem good - at least the ones I can find.
