We have a 2000 Dodge Intrepid 3.2 Liter V6 with about 92,000 miles. My fiance went way too long without an oil change and eventually ran it dry. We are able to get the car started but it makes some clunking noises. A neighber looked at it and said the cam (?) Is bad? He said the actual engine sounds ok and the cam belt is ok but the actual cam is bad. Will someone please tell me what the heck this means? Also, anyone have any idea how much of a repair bill we are talking? Thanks.

Engine needs rebuilt, at the very least. Running it dry will have caused the cam and driveshaft bushing to have burned out from friction. Both shafts will need to be turned to smooth them back out and new bushings put in.

This will be expensive, it might be cheaper to find a wrecked (rearended) vehicle and take its engine.

You'll need to call a few repair places locally that do engine rebuilds to see how much it will cost. Make sure you ask for references to check on their work.
