Our daughter's 02 Intrepid had white smoke or steam coming from under the hood. She is young a nd didn't know which. We found that it had a crack in the coolant recovery tank and have replaced it. We don't believe the car overheated, but we are curious, as to whether it was smoke or steam from the engine. If antifreeze had escaped from the crack in the recovery tank and spilled onto the hot engine would it have caused smoke due to burning off, or steam?

If the steam has an oily antifreeze smell yes it could. Keep an eye on your temp. Indicator and look for too much steam for more than one day of heating up and driving because it could be serious engine problem since the recovery tank should not have failed unless damaged by collision or breaking by mistake.
