I need to get timing done on my car, mechanic says not to do it, better of to put new engine in it, because type of engine it is. Intrepid 2001

Its a chain and a belt
no start do you have spark and fuel
did the chain brake how’s the compression
if compression is OK and you have spark check if you have cam signal
disconnect the cam sensor and try to starter it will crank for a bit

Ok no spark did he check the crank sensor
hook it up to scanner and read data as cranking look for crank and cam signal and if you have sync

OK !
They are not the best engines made but
still doesn’t explain why no spark
if you have good compression
no noises just no start and no spark !
That’s is a 1st for me changing an engine because has no spark
seek a different opinion
let some one else look at it

Let's start from the begining. What engine is in your Inrepid? From your mechanic's answer it sounds like you have a 2.7L V6. This engine get a unfair bad rap from a lot of technicians. A lot of people don't like this engine because they don't understand it or the sight of three timing chains scares them. Now here are some important questions.
. Did the enging jump time?
. Are you doing this for maintaince?
If it did jump time then you most likley will need an engine. One tooth off could bend several valves.
