2001 Dodge Intrepid Knocking sound at idol

My engine knocks at idol, but it stops at 1000 rpm or more. Sometimes it does not knock at all.
Am I about to blow a rod? Is there anything that I can do to prolong the life of my engine. It is a 2.7 Litre v-6

You might be in trouble on this one. The oil doesn't circulate well from a build up of sludge due to a poor design. There are hot spots that cook the oil internally.
