Engine Performance problem
1997 Dodge Intrepid 6 cyl Four Wheel Drive Automatic

my intrepid sport overheated on me several months ago. I let the car completely cool off before adding any coolant. When I tried to start it it backfired once from the breather area and once from between motor and firewall. It will turn over but will not start. My brother n law has done a lil checking and says it is not getting fire. Please help I need to get this car on the road at minimal cost. It has 3.5 liter engine and approx. 197,000 miles

Hi:
If the engine is backfiring, it's getting spark. However, I can't guarantee if it's at the right time. My guess is if it's backfiring near the firewall, either the head gasket, intake gasket, or cylender head has been damaged. You need someone to perform a compression test to see if the compression is low or too low for the engine to run.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Joe
