Transmission problem
1997 Dodge Intrepid Two Wheel Drive Automatic 180, 00 miles

ok I have a 97 dodge intrepid, and it seems to be having a problem shifting, my car has the atuo stick option, so I tryed putting that on and manually shifting it, it is stuck on 2nd and wont shift up or down. It has no problems being put into gear, drive, reverse, park. But shiting between the gears it is lacking. Also when I drive the car for just a short period of time it seems to be getting very hot and smoking from the middle left side. Looks like right under my air fillter hose. Also when I am driving it, it seems to be slipping out of gear. What do you think the problem is? How much do you think this will cost me?

Does it only stay in 2nd gear all the time? Has the check engine light come on?

Let me know.

Yes it only stays in 2nd gear and yes the check engine light is on. I took it to a shop finally and he thought it was the cesors, just wen he replaced them he said that the tranny is completly shop.I drive it everyday to and from my sons school and I can only go 45mph. If you feel like it is something else please let me know I do not have the finances for a new tranny, and they car really isnt worth a new tranny. Thank you for getting back to me and hope to hear from you again soon.

If it is in 2nd gear, that is called a safe mode. It is designed to get you home. Does that mean the trans is bad? Will he tell you what the codes are that he found?

Sorry that this is taking me so long to get back to you. I really appreciate your help though. I will go and see him today to see if he will give me the codes. I know that he told me that when he hooked it up that it was the censors, but when he put new ones on it shreded some kinda metal on the secor.

Let me know what you find. The shift sensors shouldn have scraped any metal off. They are located in the trans, mounted on the valve body. There is nothing there to cause metal to be scraped.

Let me know.

Good question. In PA, we have to offer the old parts back. If he didn't fix the problem, I would ask him to help you figure out the problem at no charge. Does he seem receptive to discussing the issue with you or not?
