My 2000 Dakota 4x4 with 4.7 engine, automatic trany and 47K miles surges at an idle. It is especially bad when first started and runs up to 2200 RPM immediatly. As is warms up it surges from 700 RPM or so to 1200 RPM. When fully warm, it diminishes the surging but still occurs. Any ideas?

Have the coolant temperature sensor and idle air control valve/controller checked. Also might want to clean out throttle body/plate/linkages.
