My 1989 dodge dakota has started to act up and the engine races up to about 5000 rpm (red lining) as the truck goes to shift. Its an automatic transmission 6-cylinder 3.9 liter 4 wheel drive. I was thinking it could be the transmission or possibly a clog in the carborator. Any help will be much appreciated.

Hi Smooph,

Thank you for the donation.

Here are a list of possible causes.

Aerated fluid.
Defective clutch or servo.
Governor support seal rings broken or worn.
Improper fluid level.
Incorrect shift linkage or cable adjustment.
Incorrect throttle linkage adjustment or binding linkage.
Restricted filter assembly.

Check the fluid condition and level first. If fluid is dark, the filter would have to be replaced as well.
