Caravan transmission problem?

95 dodge caravan - 183,000 miles V6 rebuilt transmission that's about 5 years old

starting out the van sometimes won't shift out of first gear. Turning the car off and restarting has solved the problem so far - this is happening every 3 days or so

also, on freeway going 65mph etc. I'll lose all gears or so it seems. I'm in drive, but it feels like neutral (no drive) I'll pull of on the shoulder, occasionally it will slip back into to first and sometimes not. Turning the car off and restarting solves this too.

any ideas?

Turn the ignition on and off somewhat fast. Like on, off, on, off, on. And see if your check engine light blinks. It will be short pauses between the numbers. If its a long pause, its starting a new code. So, blink blink blink blink blink blink blink is 34. And blink blink blink blink is 22. Like that. Tell me what you get

Actually,

I did this several times and I found it to be the same every time, but I also found this code hard to read

this is exactly what the flashing is - perhaps you can make sense of it:

blink (pause) blink blink (pause) blink blink blink (pause) blink blink (pause long)
blink blink blink blink blink (pause) blink blink blink blink blink

it's hard for me to get the code from this, however after doing this several times it's the same everytime.

Look like 12 and 32.

12 is Battery or computer recently disconnected

im not sure about the 32, because these codes shouldnt effect your model year.

But I will post all three as a reference to anyone who may be able to help.

# 32 (1984 only) power loss/limited lamp or circuit
# 32 EGR gases not working (1988) - check vacuum, valve
# 32 (1990-92, all but Turbo) computer didn't see change in air/'fuel ratio when EGR activated - check valve, vacuum lines, and EGR electrical

the 55 is a signal that the code list has ended.

With your engine light being on the car kinds goes into a funky mode where you get crappy milage and different parts of the car act wierd. You can take it to your local pep boys and they can run a diagnostic and clear the engine light for about 60 bucks. But I will keep pondering on your situation.
