Cluster and gauge behavior

My 2005 Grand Caravan has been giving me problems for over a year now. It started out as erratic gauge behavior in that they would all just suddenly move to the right and then come back to normal. Most recenlty it has begun to die on me as I am driving down the road (preceded by the whole light show of dash flickering and gauge chaos prior to the dying) however it starts back up immediately. It also had begun to leave me stranded at some times with me going to start it and not so much as a lone flicker greeting me. Just dead silence and darkeness. I have had it in to the dealer over six times with the most recent time ending in them replacing the dash cluster circuit board (whatever that is) which has not fixed the problem. This resulted only after I was able to catch the van in a moment of distress and be fortunate enough to be close enough to the shop to drive it in and let them see the problem (as if my descriptions were not enough). Does anyone have a solution to this problem? It is about to get the best of my nerves as I wonder each time I put my 2 & 4 year olds in their carseats if the heap of junk I am driving is going to get them killed.

Hi:
To me it sounds like a ground problem. Have them check all of the grounds and body grounds. You can check the basic ones yourself. Check the battery ground both at the battery and where it connects to the engine block and body. Make sure the are clean and tight.

If everything checks out, have the dealer check all ground straps under the hood and vehicle. If they are all ok, have the alternator checked. There may be a problem there.

Let me know if this helps and what you find out from the dealer.

Joe
PS: I'm not there, but for the cluster to act like that, it's either a ground or the alt itself.

There are 2 body grounds at the base of the B pillars on both sides. There is also a ground under the battery box that tends to corrode pretty badly. Also have your body control module checked for ground. Its located on the firewall inside the cab ahead of your left foot as you drive.

2006 Dodge Grand Caravan: key turns and engine makes clicking noise for as long as key turned. Instrument panel/lights work, but speedometer and RPM meter go from zero to fully deflected and back. Noise appears to come from around power steering bottle in engine (approx upper right of main engine block). Engine will not turn, just clicks.

Hello,

Ok, the clicking sound is usually one of a couple things.

Low CCA (Cold Cranking Amps) - Which is what is needed to turn the engine over. The battery can be fully charged and not start the engine.

Bad Starter

Loose, Dirty or Bad Ground Wire(s)
