my ac packed it in, in the city. I would like to get it out of the city and down the road 20 minutes to home. Is there some way of finding a smaller serpentine belt to run everything else, thereby eliminating the ac?

Yes, just take a piece of spring and wrap it around the a/c compressor and measure. Subtract that measurement from the belts current length and tell the local auto part store you need a belt that is shorter by (however many inches?) With the same amount of ribs as current belt. Trick is to get shorter belt to get tight enough, depends on how the belt is routed wether this will work or not also.
