2000 Dodge Caravan Rough idle & surging

It started with fuel smell after starting. But ran fine. One day it started and ran rough the engine light came on and it ran rough surging a bit down the road. It seems like after it warms up more it goes away, and sometimes it goes away after being turned off and started again. Somedays it doesn't run rough at all. Thanks.

Suspect that it need a tune up but since have check engine light on, should get the codes 1st
this is one way to get the codes

Turn ignition switch to OFF position.
Press and hold TRIP and RESET buttons.
While holding buttons, turn ignition switch to ON position.
Continue to hold TRIP and RESET buttons until odometer IF window displays CODE (about 5 seconds).
If a problem exists, odometer will display Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC).
If any DTCs are present, note DTC and let us know
If no problem exists, DTC 999 (end of DTC test) will be displayed. Go to next step.
After DTC display ends (DTC 999 displayed), instrument cluster will go into each of the following tests in order: dim test, calibration test, odometer segment test, and electronic transmission range indicator segment test.
