I just got this van two and a half weeks ago for $900.00, and finally got it into the shop. My mom has had it pretty much for the last two weeks, and was able to get it into the shop today (my schedule is pretty hectic). The tech told her it has got coolant in the engine oil, but the previous owner just had the coolant replaced only a short bit before he sold it. Since he didn't want it to freeze with the subzero temperatures we were getting.
How do you know how long it has been happening, and did I just get taken advantage of or can I fix this?

Welcome to 2CarPros.

Honestly, one can't tell how long. However, this is usually an indication of a bad head gasket. What I suggest is to read through this link. It shows how to test for a bad head gasket.

Do this first so we can confirm if it is a bad head gasket.

Let me know what you find.
