Sounds like is taking awhile to get the oil to the top of the engine. Has the oil been changed on recomended time/miles? If not or if you use a cheap oil it more than likely partially clooged from oil deposits. You can try to flush the engine but you must be careful, and they recomend you pull the oil pan and remove deposits with engines with high miles.

On older engines I like to use an additive for the oil. I prefer lucas, and have had good luck with it. If you do buy additive for the oil make sure it does not contain teflon.
