When I go to crank my car it will start and then shuts right back off. Then have to let it sit for long period before it starts

Hi:
After the car starts and dies, does it turn over trying to start? Can you hear the fuelpump turn on for a couple seconds then shut down? Also, do you know how to check for spark? If so, when the van won't start, check for spark.
