Hi,

Why does my mechanic say it is so difficult in doing a tune up for my 1999 sebring Jxi, he is quoting $500-$1000 dollars?

Please respond asap.

What are they going to do? Spark plugs are difficult to replace on some engines. Replacing the timing belt is good insurance. If it breaks, many engines will have about $2000.00 worth of valve damage.

There's very little else to do on most engines. If you want a definite answer, you have to provide at least a few details.

Dear Caradiodoc,

You asked me to supply more details as to the tune up.I really could you use your help, just let me know what other info I can supply you with.

I recently had surgery and there were alot of out of pocket expenses so I am really financially unable to pay so much for a tune up at this time.

Hope to hear from oyu soon.

You have more information than I do. If they gave you an estimate, they have something in mind. You must find out what that is. For many years tune-ups have turned into nothing more than new spark plugs and an air filter. All of the other parts that were normally replaced aren't used anymore.

Spark plugs on a lot of cars are real hard to replace because ease of servicability is not what sells cars. Still, $500.00 is WAY out of line to just replace the plugs. That's why I assume they plan on doing additional work. The dollars you mentioned would suggest they are going to replace the timing belt to prevent very serious damage to the engine. I don't have any way of knowing what their plans are, but with the mileage, a new timing belt is good insurance.
