Fuel Gauges and the fuel pump

I have a 1998 Chevy Venture and the fuel gauge has been acting funny lately. It swings wildly from empty to full when it is down to a half tank or less. Is this an indication that the fuel pump is ready to go?

If its any thing like my '99 olds sillhouette the fuel gauge started going crazy then it started jumping and bucking then the pump just quit. Cost $320.00 for a new pump and its in gas tank
