2002 Chevy Venture Front Wheel Drive Automatic 110, 00 miles

Recently when I start my car it over revs and continues to over-rev while I am driving it. Just yesterday it was over-revving and while I was moving the temperature was fine, but anytime I stopped for a traffic light the temperature would start to rise. Once I started moving again, the temperature would gradually return to normal. Also, my car doesn't seem to be shifting like it should especially going up a steeper hill. How can I tell if it is a mechanical problem or a computer problem? What do you think is the problem with my car?

First thing you need to do is have the codes read, Autozone does it free, Post the results with the code number(s). Even if the service engine light is not on, there should be freeze frame data stored.
If it won't make it to Autozone, buy a cheap scanner, they can be had for 30-40 dollars, a good investment, since they cover all cars sold in the USA from 96 on.
If the light is blinking, it means engine misfire, possible damage to the converter. Service it right away!
