Engine Mechanical problem
2003 Chevy Tahoe V8 Two Wheel Drive Automatic Unkn miles

Had recently replaced the starter and found the negative wire corroded, cleaned and tightened. Still had to have a jump to get past starter just clicking. Engine started, several times just fine. Then clicking again. Checked connections, tightened, started fine. Now, it won't click at all, even with a jump. Good battery, 14v showing on dash. Dash lights up, but nothing at starting position. What happened? I changed the terminal end on the bad wire, could it be the battery? It won't even turn with a jump though?
It's a friend's truck, trying to help. He already paid someone to replace the starter and can't afford further expenses right now. Thanks for any help you can provide.

I'd be checkin' the "recent work" at the starter 1st, & while down there I'd jump the big wire to the little one to see if she goes, (be sure it's in park, key off) then go from there. Where'd he buy the new starter?

The starter is from AutoZone. It was working just fine on the several cranks accomplished. I have jumped the started with a driver and it has juice from the battery and spins. I've been told the battery may be reducing the juice going to the starter even while trying to jump it? Is that possible and should I change the battery? It's a gel cell, the previous owner apparently had a sound system in the truck. No system now. I've heard the gel cell batteries, once near death, cannot be revived and could interfer. What's your next thought, please? He was going to buy a battery (can't afford, borrowing $$) I told him I could loan mine from my suburban (not driving it), but is the battery going to solve this? He had started the tahoe at 3pm, and then it wouldn't at 8pm. The day before it didn't start at night, but did from the jump, which lasted till 3pm the next day?
