While driving my 02 chev tahoe I went to excellerate and the service engine soon light appeared and the truck died so I coasted into a parking lot. Put the truck in park and attempted to restart-message center flashed a battery picture. Door dingers and radio still functioning. Got a jump and it started up 1st attempt but no gauges were working. I put it into drive and tried to excellerate but it only coasted? If the battery was bad then the alternator would keep the truck running correct? If the alternator is bad would it cause the vehicle to not excellerate? Pleasehelp me!

Check and clean all battery connections. Remove the battery cables and test the battery with a voltage meter. What is the voltage?
The alternator charges the battery - it does not run the engine. If the battery is bad then the alternator will - in a sense - be strained. The best way to test the alternator is to just take it to autozone or a place like that and have them test it.
