Tow mode

2000 Chev Silverado 2 wheel drive 2500 3/4 ton this vehicle is equipped with towing package. Tow mode is not working and repair shop cannot find problem. Could the engine/transmission be damaged if I haul 4500 lb trailer for 500 miles with tow mode not operating?

All the tow mode does is lock the transmission overdrive out. Try and put it in the next lower gear with the gear lever and see if that feels like you are in the tow mode.

I do think you have an electrical problem with the tranny. Do you have a check engine light on?
