Electrical problem, I think?

I have a 2000 Chevy Z-71 with the small v8. It has about 105,000 miles on it. Every now and then it hesitates to start and after starting it will sometimes die. If I give it enough gas it will continue to run but the second I let off and the R.P.M.'S drop the truck will die again. Also while this is occuring the total electrical system will fail. The truck will continue to run but everything from gauges to stereo will shut off and then immediately come back on. Once stabilized it will do it all over again. This doesn't happen too often but it's starting to get annoying and I think it might be a short or something but I don't know where to start.

No the check engine light isn't on, I had a mechanic look at it today and they said that the battery cable was loose which didn't make sense to me since I thought the alternator took over after the vehicle was running and sometimes it would die after it had been running but I guess I'll see what happens.
