You must use synthetic gear oil. Only fill the fluid until it is about 1/2 inch below the fill plug.

I changed my rear axle assembly out and while I was doing that I changed out my universal joints. My brakes keep scrubbing and I'm feeling some wobbling in my rearend. I got the replacement rearend from a salvage yard and the part had 71,000 miles on it.

Make sure you used the correct u-joints. The brake noise could be from rust build up.

ALSO, check for a bent axle. That can give a wobbling feel.

If you planning on replacing the entire unit with a used one, it's a few hours labor and moderate difficultly, but if your planning on taking that one apart, I strongly recommend you reconsider because it requires very expensive equipment to set up properly.

Thanks for the help, I am planning on replacing the unit with a new or used one. If I can ask this also, do I have to replace the axles and everything back there of just the gear unite of the differential?

Thanks again.

No, you want to change to entire unit. Changing any part of it would involve tricky disassembly. You may have to transfer the brakes over.

OK, so I have to replace the whole back end, axles and such, what do you mean "transfer the brakes over "?

If I can ask one more question on this. Do you know where I can find an exploded view of this to take a look at?

Thanks again.

Your old brakes may be in better shape so you would transfer them to the new axle.

So I changed the rear end on my truck because original one had clacking and moving tires really bad. After I did the rear end change no noise no nothing so as I pull out the driveway at ten miles trucks start to pull and drops to 0 mph what can this be. No break lines connected went from disc to drum same ratio even did a rear end change twice. Also, u-joint bracket has one shorter bolt because I lost one did not have original one so I put one with different length Help!

Is it a LSD rear end? Is there oil in it and is it the correct oil if it is LSD? Quick test for LSD jack up rear and turn one wheel by hand, if opposite wheel turns in same direction it is an LSD if other wheel turns in a reverse direction it is a conventional diff. An LSD can be harder to turn by hand as well, and make sure trans is in neutral and park brake is off, always place on work stands when jacking a car and working under it, safety first.

You will have to see if it is a brake hanging on, with wheel locked up open brake bleeder and see if wheel starts to rotate, do this both sides.

Hello I have a question and here it is. Im installing a new rear differential carrier into my truck because my old one was shot. I did not take the pinion out and I was told as long as I did that then I didnt need to measure backlash or anything all I had to do was have new side case bearings pressed onto the new assembly and put it back in with the old shims and torque it down and I was told this by a few people so I did this and I put my axles in to turn the differential and it barely turns and it takes alot of strength to turn the axle. I can barely turn the driveshaft as well. Help I gotta get this fixed. Any ideas? Ps everything went back together fine there was no fighting to get it in. The ring gear lines right up with the pinion gear. Did I do something wrong? Or is it supposed to be really tight cuz my old one wasnt that hard to spin
