I have a chevrolet silverado 2000 with a 4.3 motor, that doesnt seem to start. Sometimes it starts and sometimes it doesnt. I have squirted starter fluid in the mouth and it will start, but then it wont.

If it starts with ether shot into it but does not stay running at all I would say fuel pump, which will be in the gas tank. If it runs for awhile then dies, or if it dies when you apply throttle-- I would say fuel filter. The fuel filter is the easiest cheapest answer, it is located on driver side on frame rail and is not very difficult to change. To positively identifyl the problem as a fuel pump, there is a way to hook up a pressure gauge at the manifold and test for pressure. Good luck ill cross fingers for the filter being your answer.

I agree with shotgundexter. If starting fluid allows the engine to run normally for a few seconds, its not getting fuel. Hopefully its the fuel filter, but if it's the pump, be prepared for a spendy repair.
