The entire upper part of the column has to come apart. There are a couple specialty tools needed along the way.

None of the manuals give a step-by-step on taking it apart

Attached below is a blown up diagram of the column assembly, hope this helps

Tilt steering on my truck has alot of up and down slop all of a sudden. This came on quickly. Is there a danger of it coming apart? The truck was just inspected and every thing up front checked OK

My 1989 chevy did the same thing. There are some bolts inside the colomn that didn't get tourqued down tight enough when they were built. If you drive it for to long without repairing it the wheel can come off. You must have a special tool to tighten these bolts. You will just need to find a mechanic wh has this tool and have them repair it. That is probably the easiest thing to do.

I recently fixed the exact problem that you are having, with the steering column. The problem is me getting it back together. I seemed to have not jotted down where a small spring goes.
It seems that the steering column has different layers. First, take the steering wheel off, then the plate. You will need special tools for these. You can rent them from most auto part stores. You will have to get down past the plastic "plate", then go under the dash to unscrew the metal bracket. This bracket holds wiring harnesses and the column in place. When you take the plastic off, gently pull the wiring harness up enough to give room to get into the center of the column. There will be small screws that you will have to tighten. This is where my problem was. You can have just enough room to stick a screw driver into the area, to tighten. Any other questions feel free to email me.

I bought this truck a month or so ago and the tilt on the steering column was already extreme wobbly, today it disengaged somewhere along the column so that I was unable to turn the steering wheel without shifting through the gears. Pushing it off of the road I had to go to neutral, and hold the shifter while turning the steering wheel so that it didn't go into another gear. All of the forums and searches I've been through bring little help for my particular truck. What kind of damage am I looking at, and what if any quickest, temporary fix options do I have. At the very least what can I do to get it neutral and steerable for a 1-2mi. Pull back home. Paying for a tow or replacement is not an option momentarily.

Sounds like the pivot pins for the tit wheel broke. They make a special tool for removing them, but you can just use a small bolt threaded into the holes, then pull the pins out with a pliers.

The hardest part may be getting to the pins as there may be trim covers to remove. Your best bet is to get a copy of the manufacturer's service manual. Don't waste your money on a Haynes manual. Those don't cover things like this.

You should be able to hold the steering wheel up in the correct position to drive for a short distance.
