The 4.3 vortec is computer controlled and you shouldn't have to set the timing unless you've removed the distributor.

Why do you think it needs to be timed.

Its running hot and it has spark knock. We took out the distributer becuse we put a differrent engine in it. So how would do we time it since it is Auto timed?

Remove No. 1 spark plug. Place finger over No. 1
cylinder spark plug hole. Crank engine slowly until compression is felt. Align timing mark on pulley to
"0" on engine timing indicator. Turn rotor to point to cylinder No. 1 spark plug tower on distributor cap.
Complete distributor installation.
