1989 Chevy S-10 jump starting a starter

I think your right and it is the starter. When I was married, my ex was a mechanic and had shown me some tricks to do when I had car trouble. One of them was to jump start the starter when it wouldnt work. It has been so long ago that I cant remember how to do it. Could you please tell me if it is touching the starter post to the battery or what it is that you need to do. Thank you. I just want to be able to test the starter and make sure this is the problem before I take it off. I tried the headlight test but the headlights did fine. Thank you

At the starter solenoid you will find the positive battery cable hooked up to the big terminal and also a purple wire hooked to a small terminal touch this 2 terminals together with a screwdriver if it doesn't kick over-the starter is defective if it kicks over-check the neutral safety switch and ignition switch.
