My car will not start. However, the radio and dome lights are still working. They work until the key is turned trying to start the car, then they go out. I own a 1998 Chevy Monte Carlo Z34.
I have a 6 cylinder engine and there are approximately 111,000 miles on the car.

The lights go out or dim when you attempt to start the car because the starter is drawing alot of current. They are also working untill you turn the key because they don't draw as much current as the starter. This could be due to a defective starter, weak battery or bad connection. Start with the easy stuff first. Check all battery connections and make sure they are tight and clean. Next charge battery fully before attempt to start the car while observing the volt meter. If the car is not equipt with one then hook one up to the battery. Voltage should not go below 9 volts while cranking the motor. If it does replace battery. And finally if none of the above has corrected the problem the starter needs to be replaced. Good luck

No, big mistake, before dealing with the starter take a few seconds and with a volt meter measure the volts of the ignition coil, only if when you turn the key and nothing happens ( no noise)
