The vehicle is a chevy metro and the engine is a 3 cylinder. The A/C fan and the A/C or just air only works with the fan in the max position, all other settings do nothing. Also the A/C will just stop sometimes when in the fan switch is in the Max position. If you push the fan switch past the max position the A/C will resume and continue working.

I have had experience where the switch its self has bad internal connections. The A/C is probably working fine the swich only sends juice to the fan at the max position. To test if this is the problem start by seeing if you can get at the back side of the switch. Test the voltage comming through the switch at the different positions. If this is the problem you will have close to 12 volts at the max position and 0 volts anywhere else.
