I have a 1977 Chevy PU 250, 6 cylender that will not come up to highway RPM. Now if I choke the engine it will come up to highway speeds and as soon as I let the choke off the engine will die. It idles, but it seems a little rough. Enough gas seems to be getting to the carburator, because it will run as long as I hold the manual choke partially closed.

It really sounds like you have a bad vacuum leak. If you have a guage available, hook it up to the engine and take a reading. You could also have a plugged cnoverter or collapsed exaust prior to the converter. A vacuum guage will show this as well with a low reading.
