2000 Chevy Malibu LS 4 dr sedan, 138xxx miles. Bought used 2 yrs ago at 81, xxx miles. Driving at highway speeds 60-65 mph, car surges 2 or 3 times then just dies. You have to sit and wait anywhere from 10 minutes to 1 hour before it will start again (cranks, just won't turn over). Had this same problem in February (2007) took it in 3 times (had to be towed in once) but said they couldn't find anything wrong with it. Finally it just stopped doing it. Have been driving it everyday since without problems until last week when it started again. Haven't taken it in yet, what's the point? Other than this problem have not had any other problems with it (knock on wood). HELP! Laid off now, don't really have the money to take it in over and over and not get it fixed. THANKS!

If there hasnt been any check engine light to give us a code, I would suspect a fuel pump. Might be drawing too much amperage on occasion, causing the relay to get hot and fail making the car run out of gas. Only way to verify is to have a fuel pressure gauge on it when it fails.
