Noises problem
2002 Chevy Malibu 6 cyl Automatic 182000 miles

A few months ago - probably about five to six - my malibu starting intermittently making an annoying squealing noise when it was started. We thought it was only when it rained or when it was cold because it didn't do it very often so we were less concerned. It has gotten progressively worse within the last few weeks. I had my serpentine belt changed about two wks ago and the noise is still terrible, not to mention embarrassing. Advanced Auto informed me that my harmonic balancer shifts excessively from side to side when the engine is running, which could most likely be the cause of my problem. Any other opinions before I spend $60 and HOPE it works?

The first thing I would suspect is a weak belt tensioner. Try this The indicator on the movable portion of the tensioner must be within the limits of the marks of the stationary portion of the tensioner. Any reading outside of these limits indicates either a defective belt or tensioner.
