Gas gauge

How do you get the gas gauge to go backwards so that it will work again? The battery was replaced and the gas gauge went in the backwards motion and when the power came back on it couldn't go up to "E" because the little black notch won't allow it. How do you fix this?

This was a common issue on these vehicles back then. So, GM released a service bulletin to fix this after a battery disconnect.

I would like to say this is a very complicated and detailed procedure, but they literally have you put a paper clip in through the trip reset button and move the needle so that it gets on the other side of that notch.
