1996 Chevy Lumina Changed battery and now car wont start

My car died on the side of the road. I got some one to jump start my car and it started right up. I went to the store and bought a new battery replaced the old one. Now the car will not turn on. All the lights are on but the engine will not cut on at all. What could this be?

Now the car will not turn on. Did you meant it will crank over and will not start or stay running or won't crank at all/nothing
