How often should one flush out engine coolants? What would be the best way to execute on a "how to do it yourself" level? Any Hazards or Precautions one should consider?

Every 120k miles is the recommended interval. Be certain to use the correct coolant recommended for your vehicle and always use a suitable containter to recycle old coolant with. There are "Do-it-yourself" kits in most part stores that let you use a water hose and the kit to flush the vehicle's system with. Fairly simple to use, just read the instructions carefully.
