The speedometer on my '04 Impala LS no longer registers the correct speed. It has no problem registering when I accelerate, however when I slow down, the needle will twitch and stay in place. If I accelerate again, the needle will begin to rise again, but it won't register slowing down. The needle has completed a full revolution around the gauge and is stuck pointing down at neutral now. Mechanics have estimated $220 for a replacement. Is there any cheaper way? Have any of you run into this problem? What is the could cause this?

He stepper motor is the cause. You need to replace the ip cluster. $220 is not a bad price. They use to be allot more when I was at the dealer

Is there a way to replace just the stepper motor or is it integrated into the instrument panel cluster?

I've never seen a way, usually the dealer will get a reman one for you. There are people that say on the internet that they can do it, but I dont believe them. I would just go to the dealer
