WOULD A COLLISION TO THE BACK BUMPER AFFECT THE CATALYST CONVERTER ON A 2002 CHEVY IMPALA AND CAUSE THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT TO COME ON?

The catalytic converter is located near the middle, more towards the front of the vehicle, on the exhaust system. If the exhaust was hit in the rear end, it may have jarred the oxygen sensor(s) loose that are near the converter, throwing an engine code for this. Actually damage to the converter, however, would not be caused by a small bumper collision.

Hope this helps.
