2001 Impala 3.8L Engine Knocking?

Hey everyone. I have a 2001 Impala 68,000 miles. 3.8L engine. It started making a "knocking" noise this past Sunday so I took it to be looked at and they said that I need a new engine. I talked with them on the phone so I don't know the specific reason as to why, but I'm going over there tomorrow to know exactly. Has other people had a problem with this? Could it be something else? To include with this we just recently had the Transmission rebuilt (about 8 months ago) and about 3 months ago had the intake gasket fixed.

Well my 2001 Impala is very nice but I hear I weird knocking noise in the front of the car, it's like all the car is cracking, I hear that noise only when I'm accelarating from a dead stop, all little acceleration or when I put it in reverse so if you have the same probleme maybe its your ball joint, bushing, cardans (I don't know the english word), your tie rod. Well My motor and my transmission seem to be all rigth! I'll fix it when I'll have the money!
