I came to a stop at moms house, left the car running, stood out of car to talk for 5 min tops. I got back in the car, put it in drive, pressed the accelerator pedal down and suddenly the car made a vibration type noise (thud) and then died. I restarted it, it was idling very rough, and again when I tried to accelerate it made the noise again and stalled, as if there was no gas getting into the engine to go.
I hope you can understand what i'm trying to describe and give me a probable cause or even something I can try to maybe diagnose the problem.

The car is due for an oil change and tune-up.

Maybe I should mention that I ran out of gas in the car the afternoon before, could this have had something to do with it?

Check if you have a security light on and or blinking
and if so leave the key in the ignition in the on position for about 10 min or until light stop blinking
turn key off then try to start

I'm sorry if you got the impression that it was a security issue. I guess what I should have said is the thud (vibration) noise came when I accelerated. The car had no power of acceleration to the point that it just died after a few feet. I guess as if there were no gas getting in the engine, but there was gas in the car. Someone mentioned the oil pump may be going out or its very badly out of time. Neither of which I would be able to recognize so I might need a way of diognosing or eliminatining the maybe obvious.
