Engine Cooling problem
2001 Chevy Impala 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 61k miles

The temperature guage on my 2001 impala doesn't work all the time. When this happens it causes the cooling fans to run all the time. Even if you start the car for a second the fans will run for about 5 minutes after the car is turned off.I have changed the senting unit for the temp guage but that didn't help out at all.I'm thinking that there may be another senor that causing this to happen. Any ideas or has anyone had this problem.

Hi:
Actually, the temp sensor is responsible for turning the fans on. Once a certain temp is reached, the sensor sends a signal to the fan relay which inturn sends power to the fans. If they are turning on when your gauge drops, there is a short between the sensor and the relay telling the relay to run the fans. Check wiring between the fan relay and temp sensor for bare, damaged or broken wires that can be the problem.

Let me know if this helps.
