1988 Chevy Cheyenne went to second gear, truck died

Took off in first gear, went to second and the truck died and wont restart. Getting gas, not sure if uts getting spark, cahnged a fouled distributure cap and roter. Used an actron code scanner (CP9001 GM & Saturn) and it came back with a diagnostic code 12, withch accordind to the manual is about half a million thing, could you please narrow it down for me. Thank you, Dave

All a code 12 means is that the computer is working and no problems seen. You have a basic iginition problem from yout description. Go to more service repairs on this site and look up how to test an ignition system. It will walk you through the process and help you find why the truck doesn't run.
