2002 Chevy Cavalier Gear shifter

Just today when I got to work it was hard for me to put it in park. I did'nt want to go. So I put it back in drive and tried again and had to force it a little. And it went. But I can push in the button on the gear shifter and hear a clicking noise under dash what is this:(

The clicking noise may be the solenoid that is under the console and transfering soundling like it's coming from the dash....... here's a diagram
