2000 Chevy Cavalier lose of power

Hello,
My fiance was driving my car to work this morning when all a sudden the check engine light came on and it lost almost all power he finished driving it into work at about 7 miles per hour thats all the power it had.
Is there any suggestions as to what might have caused this?

Hi:
Anything I say would be a guess. If the check engine is on, take it to a nationally recognized parts store and have them check for trouble codes. That will identify the problem. Let me know what you find. Also, most of these stores will do it for free.
