I have a 1997 Chevy Cavalier that acts up mainly first thing in the mornings or when im going to park in a parking lot somewhere, when car is going at a slow speed. The car doesnt not brake readily, it takes about a few seconds for them to catch it seems and when they do the car shutters and there is sometimes a buck or kick from the rear of the car. This only happens intermittently, when I take it to the mechanic the problem does not occur. Also, there are new front breaks and rotors and new tires on the car. I was told a couples months ago that my rear brakes were good. BUT then what could be causing this? This has been going on for about 6 months, and getting worse. I thought when the front brakes and rotors were put on that, that would fix the problem, it didnt. I frear to drive this car in snow or ice because I never know when the "no breaks for a few seconds" is going to occur. It has been running loud lately also, I don't know if thats another problem or part of this. Thanks Estella

I would take it back to brake shop and have all the brakes bled to remove any air in system. If problem persists, have master cylinder replaced.

Does car have ABS system and is ABS light on?

Yes the car has an ABS system. No the light is not on. It is a 2.2 L engine. I was thinking maybe air in the brake lines also. It only happens intermittently, then it runs fine. Alot of times its when I approach my first stop sign of the morning at the end of my road. I will take it back to the mechanic to check for air in the brake lines. I wonder how much they charge for that one. Thanks estella

Should be less than an hour to bleed brakes, could also have moisture in line.

If bleeding does not help, look at master cylinder.

An ABS light indicates a problem with the ABS system, either mechanical or electronic.

You need to have car scanned with a chassis scanner, which will give you the ABS code ("C").
This can be as simple as a loose wheel sensor or a problem with the ABS controller.

It should be of concern and repaired as soon as possible.

Without ABS you may lock up a tire and lose control.
