What would be the problem I bought a spped sensor for the 1989 transmission to be replaced and it was the wrong part it has a four prong plug two prong part spped sensor
it was replaced by a private mechanic and it still does not work what could be the problem the needle moves to 0 than stops.

I ahve to be sure before I put any money into the car for unessasary repairs that could cost me hundreds is it the transmission or something else?

Either the VSS is still the wrong part, or the wiring has an open/short in it, or the speedometer in the IP is bad.
The dealer should be able to test the speedometer gauge in the IP, so you could eliminate that as a problem.
