my husbands car just broke down and it blew fire out the back end and then died and when he tried to start it again it made a loud clicking sound like somebody shaking a paint can

Unfortunately, it sounds as though his motor blew. The fire coming from the tail pipe is raw fuel being ignited inside of the exhaust system. But there's no way to tell exactly why without tearing down the motor and having a look.

The rattling sound you hear when trying to start the car are broken parts flying around inside of the engine.

There's not really much you can do besides get another motor, or have that one fixed.
