Electrical problem
1986 Chevy Camaro Manual

Ok, i'm 17 and dont know really anything about cars and i have an 86 Camaro and the battery gauge (not sure if thats the name) inside the car drops below 13 when i drive at night. At first i thought it was because my stero was in so i took it out (portable jensen face plate) but that didnt help so i just figured the headlights are causing the problem because when i turn them off it goes back to normal above 13. Sooo I have no idea how to fix this problem and my father wont help me because he said its time for "his little girl to take it upon herself to fix it". So thats what i'm doing and if anyone has any information i would greatly appreciate it!

Hello, at night when lights are used the amps will drop a little even under 13 as long as it dont go to red or 0 its ok, but also sometimes alternator is just a little weak because of age but no need to change if car starts right up ok. Notice even in day time when u step on brake the needle will drop just a bit, always when u use power electric it will drop a bit. Test the alt to see if its ok. Just turn on your car open hood and losen one of the battery cables anyone and unplugg it, dont worry u wont get shok at all its safe. When u remove one cable and if engine stalls that means the alternator is bad but if it stays on its ok. Also its a good idea to clean battery post both and cables. Im me if you have a question. Good luck

Try getting your battery and alt tested at autozone I belive its free. Also if you have a system in your car you might want to get a larger amp or a second battery. If u had your lights changed to projecton or hid you might also look into a larger alt. But your ca should run fine. If it drops below 11 then I would deffinitly check it out. Just my 2 cents. Yeah a car can run arund 8 volts if nothing is on :P later btw what engine you got in that beast
