i have a 95 chevy blazer and it has an exhaulst leak. My husband has been working on it but when we looked at the cat converter one end that the muffler goes to is fine, the other end of it goes around the other pipe and has been welded on the bottom half but the top half has a gap about 1" wide. Could that be the reason our blazer runs really loud and sucks gas like real bad?

That could cause loud exhaust but by that time the fuel is already burnt so that would not be the reason for poor fuel mileage. Check spark plugs to ensure they are sparking good, if OK make sure oxygen sensors are working.
